Students completing a Gallery Walk group learning activity
I believe that challenges promote growth and learning. Because I interact mostly with junior and senior-level students, I aim to challenge students to rise to new heights each semester as they approach their future professional roles.
I aim to provide opportunities for students to gain knowledge and develop important professional skills through active, authentic, and experiential learning. In all of my courses, I use a variety of activities to keep learners of various backgrounds and abilities engaged in learning. In addition to lectures, I use active learning activities like jigsaws, discussion mixers, brief in-class writing activities, and gallery walks. In many of these activities, I expect students to take responsibility for their learning and I use assessments (e.g., quizzes, follow-up discussion questions) to determine if these strategies are effective. At the end of the semester, I want students to leave my class with increased knowledge, professional skills, and enthusiasm for learning.
I have spent almost 10 years coordinating service-learning courses that involve undergraduates as mentors or peer-educators within prevention programs. This "win-win" approach helps both the students and program participants.
